Art Romanticizes a Downward Spiral?

Picture gallery, Metropolitan Fair, N.Y.C by Mathew Brady. Original public domain image from Flickr

It’s been like this for centuries:
the living at war with the dead.
At war with themselves
for having no choice but to soon join them.

And yet, they bring their own destruction:
Da Vinci cuts off his ear.
The lumberjack cuts open the wolf.
Othello smothers Desdemona.
And Hitler bites down on cyanide.

The blade of the guillotine
falls on us all,
and we must depict it as art.
