Tell the trees your problems

Life is full of trials and tribulation. Not breaking news, I know. However, most of us trick ourselves into believing that, eventually, when conditions are just right, we will never have to worry or trouble over anything again, big or small.

False. There is always, always going to be something that stresses you out.

The solution: finding peace and comfort by working through these stressors.

Sometimes, “working through your stressors” means taking action in order to see visible changes. Sometimes, it involves confronting a person. But most times, it means shifting your thoughts and looking at life with a positive perspective. Sappy, I know. But it works.

WARNING: You can look at what I say next as a symbolic gesture towards introspection and inner enlightenment. Or you can take my meaning to be literal and do this crazy thing for yourself. The result is the same.

When life isn’t going your way, and you are unable to lay your head down at night with an easy heart, you must begin telling the trees your problems.

Seriously, go outside and find a tree–or stay inside and locate a houseplant–and start voicing your every worry, fear, and uncertainty. This tree is a living, breathing entity that will listen intently and not pass judgement.

1. Say Whatever is on Your Mind

Talk with no filter and in a stream-of-consciousness sort-of-way. Talk through your day and all that will follow. List your concerns, your desires, and your love for all things. It really helps to remind yourself of what is important and deserving of your energy.

2. Express Gratitude

Trees give so much: oxygen, shelter, beauty, and balance to the ecosystem. Simply taking a moment to thank them can create a sense of groundedness. Though not human, they are a reminder that every living thing has a load to bear.

3. Ask for Guidance

If you’re feeling lost, uncertain, or need clarity, you can ask the trees for guidance. They’ve witnessed the cycles of life for ages and might offer the quiet stillness you need to find answers within yourself. Reflecting on the enormity of existence, can help you realize that nothing is ever too serious. All you can do is take the path that seems best at that given moment.

4. Share Your Emotions

Talking to trees can be a form of emotional release. Trees stand through storms, dry spells, and sunny days, and they carry the marks of their experiences. You can share your own feelings, knowing that nature doesn’t judge but simply holds space.

5. Acknowledge the Sacred Connection

Sometimes, just recognizing the deeper connection between yourself, the tree, and the Earth can bring a sense of peace. Trees remind us that everything is interwoven. And this doesn’t have to be viewed in an overly-spiritual sense if you are not like that. Simply, it is a fact that all living creatures work to keep one another alive. And that knowledge is more than enough.

6. Reflect on Impermanence

Many trees go through cycles of life and death, symbolizing renewal and impermanence. You can look to the tree’s life for comfort to help you accept change and embrace the natural rhythms of life.

Trees are such powerful and wise beings—often, the most meaningful moments come when you sit quietly, open your heart, and allow yourself to be in their presence, reflecting on all forms of life around you.
